Johan is a partner in the firm's Litigation Practice Group. His practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, including insurance coverage matters, business torts, Section 1983 suits, media/defamation claims, shareholder disputes, and real property litigation. Johan also serves as the Director of Law School Recruitment and is Vice Chair of the firm's Recruiting Committee.

  • Maximized coverage for apartment owners in dispute with insurance carrier over recovery under crisis response coverage in incident involving carbon monoxide leak
  • Recovered payment for venture capital company and officers and directors in dispute with D&O insurer over coverage arising out of claims of breaches of fiduciary duty and conspiracy
  • Achieved coverage payment for bank in dispute with insurer over recovery under fidelity bond in matter involving alleged misappropriation of funds
  • Represented hospital authority in successful state court litigation with state guaranty association over payment of claims upon insolvency of authority’s primary insurer
  • Represented land-owner in successful boundary line litigation involving state court trial and argument before the Supreme Court of Virginia
  • Represented land-owner in successful litigation involving state court trial over existence of implied storm water drainage easement
  • Achieved Rule 12(b)(6) dismissal of multi-million dollar suit filed in the Eastern District of Virginia alleging tortious interference, conspiracy and fraud against business client
  • Represented municipal client in three-week federal trial of Section 1983 claim resulting in judgment for client on all counts
  • Represented pro se prisoner upon request of federal court and achieved summary judgment on liability and jury verdict on damages in Section 1983 case involving Eighth Amendment violation
  • Represented plaintiff in fraud litigation resulting in award of compensatory and punitive damages and attorney’s fees for client
  • Oral arguments before United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Section 1983 cases representing city police chief and city council member
