Do You Need a Social Media Policy?

You are on top of the social media craze and have a Facebook page for your Restaurant X. A member of your wait staff had a less than pleasant experience with some rude and unruly customers who walked out without paying for their dinner. You find out that after the employee left work that night he posted a string of expletives on your Facebook page indicating how pleased he was to serve those particular customers. How should you handle it? Are you liable for your employees post?

A social media policy can set guidelines for your employees. The policy can prohibit actions that disparage your customers and your brand, prohibit the posting of defamatory or deceptive content, and allow you maximum discretion to monitor posts and remove objectionable content. --Nicole J. Harrell
