IT Software Manager

The Norfolk office of Kaufman & Canoles is seeking an IT Software Manager. The IT Software Manager provides application support to the operation of the firm. This position is responsible for evaluating, maintaining, and enhancing, and supporting software application packages in use on the network.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides enhancement to firm procedures through automation and customization of applications to firm's needs.
  • Provides task-specific suggestions and support to users in connection with facilitating departmental or positional procedures by implementing updated software applications.
  • Evaluates and provides recommendations regarding purchase of new software. Tests compatibility of software packages with network configuration and existing software.
  • Researches application issues and updates through legal IT communities, the Internet, and other information sources.
  • Performs continuous searches for software, support, or application advice that would enhance network or user performance.
  • Assists with maintenance of network.
  • Assists department with special projects as assigned.
  • Provide additional support for Help Desk calls as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Technical knowledge of personal computers and software as normally acquired through technical course work or equivalent experience.
  • Expert technical skills and ability to operate and support large data processing operations, including advanced knowledge of hardware, operating systems, DBMSs, spreadsheets, word processing, and communications packages currently in use, specifically the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced knowledge of and familiarity with VBA and scripting languages.
  • Maintenance of Active Directory Account.
  • Maintenance and creation of group policies.
  • Knowledge of SQL Server, including queries, SQL Server Agent jobs, database maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Elite 3E, including Elite Design Gallery.
  • Knowledge of Document Management System, specifically iManage.
  • Office template and numbering packages, specifically BigHand Create and Hyperstyles.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to assist staff and attorneys and train users on system operations and to communicate by phone and provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
  • Ability to recognize and solve routine problems, including data entry errors, hardware failures, and policy adherence problems.

IT Software Manager 

Part-Time Real Estate Assistant

The Chesapeake office of Kaufman & Canoles is seeking a part-time Real Estate Assistant. Under general supervision provides general office support with a variety of administrative and related tasks. Responsible for answering incoming calls, directing calls to the appropriate personnel, setting up and cleaning conference rooms, kitchen organization and cleaning, supply inventory and stocking, processing outgoing postal mail, sorting inter-office and incoming postal mail, submitting check requests, accepting payments from clients, supporting the Legal Assistants and Attorneys with various task such as time sheets, pleading indexes, folder labels, copies/prints and other duties as assigned. Maintains positive contact with attorneys, support staff and clients; observes confidentiality of client and firm matters. Candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Office 2016, have excellent communication and writing skills and exhibit attention to detail.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interacts with the clients via telephone, email and in person
  • Operates standard office equipment, including personal computer, copier, scanner, and telephone
  • Reviews, sorts and dates mail
  • Arranges and schedules client appointments using KCI Reservation
  • Assists in preparing for and setting up meetings
  • Cleaning and inventory of kitchen areas, conference rooms and supply areas
  • Coordinates daily catering orders and pays monthly catering house accounts
  • Assist in light typing, filing and making copies for attorneys

QUALIFICATIONS:

Kaufman & Canoles is seeking a qualified Real Estate Litigation Paralegal to serve in our Newport News office. This position includes responsibilities such as review of title searches and gathering information from a range of sources. The qualified candidate would be involved in various aspects of litigation, including preparing lawsuits, motions, discovery, deposition summaries, settlement documents, and legal research. The candidate should also have experience working with and preparing real estate documents, including deeds, deeds of trust, certificates of satisfaction, boundary line agreements, subordination agreements and related documents. Maintains detailed and accurate daily billable hour records. Experienced real estate litigation and eminent domain litigation is important. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs work independently, is proactive, and takes responsibility for the tasks associated with multiple projects. Maintains a centralized database recording the current status of each case
  • Researches information from various departments and sources, including but not limited to subscription research services, the Internet and the library
  • Coordinate the gathering of information, materials, documents, reports and evidence
  • Review and summarize depositions and other legal documents
  • Prepare trial notebooks and organize exhibits
  • Utilize technical information to make decisions and recommendations to the supervising attorney
  • Prepare reports, correspondence and other documents
  • Interact with clients in person, over the telephone and via email
  • Maintains detailed and accurate daily billable hour records.  Goal requirements are to bill 1550 hours per year to client matters

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College degree in a related field or Paralegal Certificate required
  • Must possess 3 or more years experience
  • Real Estate and litigation experience required
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of legal terminology and legal principles generally acquired through college-level study
  • Ability to perform legal research using reference materials generally available within a law library and/or electronic resource tools

Civil Litigation Paralegal

Immediate opening for smart, driven, team-player paralegal. Kaufman & Canoles is seeking a qualified full time Civil Litigation Paralegal to serve in our Richmond office. The candidate will support a minimum of three attorneys plus other support staff in consumer finance, labor & employment, business and real estate litigation in state and federal courts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drafting and preparing pleadings (complaint, answers, motions and discovery) and other legal documents
  • Researching into party identity and location and asset searches
  • Organizing and managing case file and organizing files electronically
  • Creating hard-bound trial notebooks
  • Drafting deposition summaries
  • Organizing and reviewing discovery documents for responsiveness and privilege
  • Obtaining service of process and assisting with the issuance of summons and writs
  • Editing and formatting briefs and memorandums
  • Coordinating e-filing with print vendors for appellate level briefs
  • Managing docket of deadlines and case priorities
  • Managing document storage and production and handling electronic discovery processes
  • Professional communications with clients and court personnel (daily basis)
  • Attending weekly meetings as needed and updating attorneys on status of active cases
  • Filing documents with the courts
  • Keeping accurate records of all communication (i.e. phone calls, emails, secure messages), expenses, case documents (such as client intake sheets, pleadings, etc.)
  • Maintaining detailed and accurate daily billable hour records. Goal requirements are to bill 1550 hours per year to client matters and collect two-and-one-half times annual compensation in client fees


QUALIFICATIONS:
